Half Moone Cruise Terminal (Norfolk’s downtown cruise embarkation building) is the building referenced throughout this page.

Last updated: May 2026. Independent guide. Not affiliated with any cruise line.

A self-guided port day designed for same-sex couples stepping off at Half Moone. The route is walking-distance, photogenic, paced for two people who would rather have a slow brunch than rush through a checklist, and built around places that are visibly comfortable for couples holding hands.

For the broader gay context, see the Friends of Dorothy in Norfolk hub.

The Day at a Glance

  • Morning: Coffee near the terminal, slow walk along the waterfront promenade.
  • Late morning: Mermaid Trail photo walk through downtown.
  • Brunch: Ghent or downtown, 11 AM–1 PM.
  • Early afternoon: NEON District murals and a gallery stop.
  • Late afternoon: Return walk along the waterfront, back to the ship.

Total walking distance: 3–4 miles spread over six hours. Nothing strenuous.

Why This Route Works for Couples

Three reasons. First, it stays in the part of Norfolk where same-sex couples holding hands does not draw attention — downtown, Ghent, the NEON District. Second, the route is photogenic without being touristy: waterfront, public art, murals, and quiet residential streets. Third, the pace is built around brunch as the anchor, not as an afterthought, which makes it actually feel like a date.

Norfolk scored 100 out of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index. In practical day-to-day terms, that translates to a downtown where same-sex couples are unremarkable, not just tolerated.

Morning: The Slow Start

Walk off the ship and turn west on the waterfront promenade. There is no rush. Coffee at a downtown café — some open by 7 AM, most by 8. Take fifteen minutes on the riverfront. The morning light on the Elizabeth River is better than the midday light, and the temperature in summer is much more forgiving early.

Late Morning: The Mermaid Trail

Norfolk’s nickname is Mermaid City. Painted mermaid sculptures from a public-art project in the early 2000s are scattered across downtown. Finding them is a built-in walking route — you make decisions about which way to go, you pause for photos, and you cover the downtown core without it feeling like a forced march.

For couples, the mermaid hunt has a specific advantage: it is a shared activity that does not require either of you to be a guide. Both of you are scanning the streets for the next sculpture. It is collaborative without being effortful.

See the Norfolk Wild Goose Chase guide for a more structured version.

Brunch

This is the centerpiece of the day. Two hours, not 45 minutes. See Gay-Friendly Brunch in Norfolk for specific recommendations — Ghent is the most relaxed option for couples; Selden Market works if you want a food hall vibe; downtown weekend brunch is the closest walk from the terminal.

Order something you would not eat on the ship. Cruise food is fine; brunch in a neighborhood restaurant is what you do not get at sea.

Early Afternoon: NEON District

The Norfolk Arts District (NEON) is a 10-minute walk from downtown or a five-minute walk from many Ghent restaurants. Rainbow crosswalks, murals, independent shops, and galleries. The murals are the obvious photo opportunity — they make good couples photos because the scale of the wall versus two people in front of it is striking.

d’Art Center is a low-key gallery stop in the district. Velvet Witch and Kitsch are the shops to know if you want a non-touristy souvenir. See the Queer-Owned and Gay-Friendly Businesses Near Half Moone page for detail.

Late Afternoon: The Return Walk

Walk back along the waterfront. Stop at Town Point Park if you have time and energy. The USS Wisconsin is visible from the path — the battleship is a photo target whether or not you care about naval history. Build a 30 to 45-minute buffer before all-aboard.

Variations

For Anniversary or Honeymoon Couples

Add a small treat: a rooftop bar visit late afternoon (see rooftop dining near the cruise terminal), or a Victory Rover Naval Base Cruise (a two-hour narrated harbor tour from the same address as Half Moone) if you have a longer day in port. The narrated harbor tour is the rare cruise-port activity that is genuinely peaceful for two people.

For Couples Who Hate Walking

Cut the NEON segment. Anchor the day at Town Point Park (morning), brunch in Ghent (rideshare both ways), and a slow afternoon back near the waterfront. Total walking: maybe a mile.

For Couples Who Love Walking

Add the Ghent residential loop. Ghent’s side streets are tree-lined, the architecture is photogenic, and a 45-minute residential walk after brunch is one of the better uses of an afternoon. See Walkable Things to Do from the Cruise Terminal.

What to Wear

Comfortable walking shoes. Light layers in spring and fall. Bright colors photograph well against the waterfront and murals. Hat and sunglasses in summer. If brunch is the centerpiece, dress for brunch, not for hiking — you can still walk in nice clothes.
