Carnival Sunshine was Norfolk’s primary year-round homeport ship through 2026, sailing four- and five-day Bahamas itineraries from the Norfolk Cruise Terminal in downtown Norfolk. This guide covers what passengers boarding the Sunshine in Norfolk need to know — boarding logistics, the ship itself, common itineraries, and what to do in Norfolk before you sail.

What’s replacing the Sunshine
Carnival Sunshine is being rotated out of Norfolk in 2027 and replaced by Carnival Freedom as the primary year-round Norfolk ship. Carnival Magic also sails select Norfolk itineraries. If your cruise is booked for 2027 or later, double-check your reservation — your ship may have changed.
Typical itineraries from Norfolk
Carnival Sunshine sailed three main itinerary patterns from Norfolk:
- 4-day Bahamas: Norfolk → Nassau → Half Moon Cay (Carnival’s private island) → Norfolk
- 5-day Bahamas: Norfolk → Nassau → Princess Cays or Half Moon Cay → Norfolk, with one sea day
- 5-day Bermuda: Norfolk → Bermuda (Royal Naval Dockyard, overnight) → Norfolk, with one or two sea days
Longer 6- to 8-day itineraries appeared occasionally with additional Caribbean or Bermuda stops. Verify your specific sail dates on your Carnival booking — itineraries can change with weather or operational needs.
Boarding at the Norfolk Cruise Terminal
The Norfolk Cruise Terminal at 1 Waterside Drive is one of the easiest U.S. embarkation ports — small, walkable, and right in downtown. Check-in typically opens around 11:00 a.m. for an afternoon departure (usually 4:00 p.m. all-aboard). Carnival emails arrival appointment windows a few days before sailing — try to honor your assigned time to avoid the worst of the line.
The terminal is a single-level boarding building. Luggage drop is curbside; security and check-in are inside. The walk from the terminal to the gangway is short — five to ten minutes depending on which deck the ship is loading.
What’s on board
The 2013 refurbishment added or expanded most of the now-signature Carnival features — Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, RedFrog Pub, Serenity adult-only retreat, SportSquare, WaterWorks slides, and SkyCourse ropes course. Dining includes the included main dining room, Lido buffet, and several specialty restaurants for an extra charge (Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse on select sailings).
The Sunshine is mid-sized by current Carnival standards — smaller than the new Excel-class ships, larger than older Fantasy-class hardware. Cabins range from interior to suites; the ship has more balcony cabins than many older Carnival ships its size due to the 2013 work.
Parking at the Norfolk Cruise Terminal
The terminal has no on-site parking — passengers use the Half Moone Garage attached to the terminal building, or one of several off-site lots with shuttle service, or a park-and-cruise hotel package. See the full Norfolk cruise terminal parking guide for current pricing and which option fits your trip.
What to do in Norfolk before you sail
Many passengers arrive in Norfolk the day before sailing — recommended in case of flight delays. The downtown area immediately around the cruise terminal has enough to fill an afternoon and evening:
- Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin — two-minute walk from the terminal.
- Waterside District — food hall five minutes away.
- Chrysler Museum of Art — free admission, ten-minute walk.
- Photogenic spots within walking distance
- Norfolk hotels for cruisers arriving early
Disembarkation day
Most Sunshine sailings return to Norfolk early in the morning (typically 7:00 to 8:00 a.m.). Self-assist debarkation passengers can usually be off the ship within 30 minutes of port arrival. Standard debarkation runs through about 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. by group. Customs clearance is typically quick — Norfolk has lower passenger volumes than Miami or Port Canaveral.
If your flight isn’t until later, see our guide for staying an extra day in Norfolk or the post-cruise brunch options near the terminal.
